Blu Ray DVD is all the rage – and for good reason.  Although they are the same size as old-fashioned CD’s and DVD’s, blank Blu Ray discs can store five times as much information as traditional DVD’s and over sixty times as much as a CD-R (up to 25 gigabytes of data on a single-layer disc, and 50 gigabytes on a dual-layer disc), which makes it possible to create a much higher quality picture than you can get using regular DVD’s.  Because you can literally just store more of the fine digital elements of the movie that normally are just lost.

In fact, Blu Ray DVD’s have six times the resolution of DVD’s (which is a much finer resolution than the best high-definition TV and cable signals); and means higher quality surround sound.  And of course, their increased storage capacity means that Blu Ray DVD’s have a much longer recording time.  You could store all of the movies on an entire wall of VHS tapes on a single Blu Ray disc.

Not only that, but Blu Ray DVD’s transfer information at a much faster rate than old-fashioned DVD’s, so they load faster and there isn’t any of the skipping and pausing which made the old DVD’s so annoying; and they never lose their high image quality.  Another advantage is that when recording to Clean Blu Ray discs you can play back the content to make sure that you are recording correctly – you can stop the recording if there’s some problem, and then pick up again where you left off without having to start all over again from the beginning.

If piracy is a worry, Blu Ray DVD’s have much better security protection than regular and HD DVD’s.  Besides codes and content protection,  Blu Ray discs also have two further protection layers – BD+ and ROM mark – which make it very difficult for pirates to copy or steal the content.  This is one of the reasons (besides their huge storage capacity) why Blu Ray discs are being used more and more to back up computer files with an external Blu Ray drive.

The name “Blu Ray” comes from the blue laser beam which is used to write and read data to and from the discs.  Because blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light, information can be packed onto a same-size disc at a greater density with blue lasers than with the red lasers used to burn standard DVD’s.  While high-definition DVD’s are also burned with blue lasers,  Blank Blu Ray discs are burned with a wider beam, which means that more information can be transferred in a shorter time and occupies less space on the disc (so a Blu Ray disc holds over half again as much information as an HD disc).  Blu Ray discs are the way of the future – isn’t time you got yourself up to date?
